Tawakkal (Trust Upon Allah)

‘Tawakkal’ is a Quranic term which means to have complete faith and trust upon Allah. Divine love requires that everything and even one’s own self should be entrusted to Allah alone. Tawakkal (Trust upon Allah) is the first lesson taught by the spiritual guide and is hence, the foundation of Faqr. Tawakkal (Trust upon Allah) is a trait of those who seek Allah.

Quran and Tawakkal

The Quran repeatedly lays great emphasis upon Tawakkal:

اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ اٰمَنۡتُمۡ بِاللّٰہِ فَعَلَیۡہِ تَوَکَّلُوۡۤا اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ مُّسۡلِمِیۡنَ ﴿۸۴﴾

Meaning: If you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him alone if you are (truly) believers. (Yunus 84)

When the entire umma of Noah left him and became hostile towards him, he said:

فَعَلَی اللّٰہِ تَوَکَّلۡتُ فَاَجۡمِعُوۡۤا اَمۡرَکُمۡ

Meaning: I have put my trust in Allah alone. Therefore, mature your plot (against me). (Yunus 71)

When Prophet Jacob was about to send Benjamin to Egypt, he took vows from his other sons and said:
“And I cannot save you by any means from Allah’s (decree) because judgment (i.e. destiny) rests with Allah alone. In Him have I put my trust, and all those who trust must trust in Him alone.” (Yusuf 67)

It is in sura an-Namlverse 79,

“So put your trust in Allah.”
According to sura at-Talaaqverse 3,

“And whoever puts his trust in Allah, then He (Allah) is sufficient for him.”
Sura aal-Imranverse 160 states, “If Allah helps you, none can overpower you; but if He abandons you taking away all support, then who is it that can help you after Him? And the believers should have firm Tawakkal in Allah alone.”

Sustenance and Tawakkal

Sustenance is not restricted to a particular place but reaches everyone wherever one may be. When an individual migrates from one place to another and observes patience with ikhlas regarding his livelihood, Allah creates such circumstances that his sustenance reaches him. This is similar to the way Allah provides food for the birds and animals. Tawakkal (Trust upon Allah) is necessary for getting sustenance. In this regard, Allah says:

وَّ یَرۡزُقۡہُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَحۡتَسِبُ ؕ وَ مَنۡ یَّتَوَکَّلۡ عَلَی اللّٰہِ فَہُوَ حَسۡبُہٗ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ بَالِغُ اَمۡرِہٖ ؕ قَدۡ جَعَلَ اللّٰہُ لِکُلِّ شَیۡءٍ قَدۡرًا ﴿۳

Meaning: And He gives him sustenance from a source which he can never think of. And whoever puts his trust in Allah, then He (Allah) is Sufficient for him. Surely, Allah accomplishes His work entirely. He has certainly appointed a measure for everything. (At-Talaaq 3)

To the faithful, Allah provides sustenance from the most unexpected sources. Hence, whoever trusts Allah in matters of sustenance, Allah is enough for him.

Hadiths and Tawakkal (Trust in Allah)

There is a hadits about Tawakkal which goes, Abu Darda related Prophet Mohammad to have said, “Sustenance searches a man in the same way as death searches him.”

  • Umar ibn Khattab narrated that he heard the Holy Prophet said, “If you trust Allah as He should be trusted then you would be given your sustenance even as He does for the birds who leave empty-stomach in the morning and return satiated in the evening.” (Ibn-e-Majah)
  • Abu Huraira related the tradition that he heard the Prophet of Allah said, “Allah says, ‘If My men put their trust in Me (have firm Tawakkal) then I would shower rain upon them all night and would make the sun rise again and again each morning without making them hear the noise of thunder’.” (Musnad Imam Ahmad)
  • There is another hadis Tawakal from Abdullah bin Abbas. He reported that once he was (riding) behind Prophet Mohammad and he said, “O young man! Protect Allah’s rights and He shall protect your rights and you would find Him right in front of you. Whatever it is that you want, seek it from Allah. Know that even if the entire world gathers to profit you, it cannot help you in the least except as Allah decrees. If the whole world is adamant to harm you, it cannot except as Allah has written for you. The pens (of destiny) have been lifted and the pages dried.” (Ahmad, Tirmidhi)

Al-Ghawth al-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani

  • Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani said: “Do not get worried about your sustenance because its search for you is more intense than your search for it. When you have obtained today’s sustenance, stop worrying about tomorrow’s, just as you have left yesterday behind. Yesterday is in the past and as for tomorrow, you do not know whether it will come to you or not, so concentrate on your present.” (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani Section 17)
  • Do not trust your wealth as it would render you weak and deficient. Have Tawakkal (trust upon Allah) as it would make you powerful and would help you. He would grace you with success from unexpected places. He would favour you with such spiritual power that you would not have to get concerned about the world and its people. Then you would become the most powerful person but if you will trust upon your wealth, family and property instead of Allah, then you shall invite Allah’s wrath and will have to face the decline of these possessions. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani Section 42)
  • Prophet Mohammad said, “Cursed is he who has trust in created beings like himself.” Most people are hence, among the cursed ones and very few actually have trust upon Allah (tawakkal) and have held the rope of Allah whereas the example of those who have trust upon created things is that of an illusion. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani Section 45)
  • Trust is the name of quitting all the sources and leaving all the causes. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani)

Important quotes

  • Sirri Saqti said that Tawakkal Allah is the renunciation of all powers and authorities.
  • Ibn-e-Masrooq said that bowing one’s head to the will and order of Allah is trust.
  • Bayazid Bastami said, “If the earth and sky turn into iron, the sky stops pouring rain and the earth becomes barren, even then I would not turn away from my trust (Tawakkal upon Allah).”

Allama Iqbal and (Tawakkal) trust on Allah

Allama Iqbal said

Explanation: The men of Allah (Fakirs) whether in power or in servitude, are always protected with the shield of contentment and indifference (that results from trust upon Allah).

Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali

Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali said:

  • Trust is the foundation of Faqr. It is the essential requirement of Divine love that you hand over everything to Allah. Outwardly the seeker should make efforts but inwardly he should completely renounce his will keeping trust in Allah.
  • Satan has absolutely no control over the seeker of Allah who possesses trust. He trusts Allah at every step and hence, finds Allah’s help in everything.
  • The seeker who has Tawakkal (trust upon Allah) is not concerned about his livelihood. The sustenance of common man is through hardwork and struggle but Allah provides the sustenance of the chosen ones. (Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali Life and Teachings)

Sultan Bahoo considers Tawakka (trust upon Allah) as the core foundation of ‘Faqr’. The seeker who does not have complete Tawakkal, cannot travel the path of Faqr.

Content and Satiated
Fakir advises to have complete Tawakkal in Allah and remain content and pleased in every condition. (Ain-ul-Faqr)

Treasures of the world
Tawakkal means that if a person has authority upon all the treasures of the world, he use them only to benefit other Muslims and renounce them for his ownself. (Aqal-e-Baydar)

Tawakkal upon Allah is Divine light
Tawakkal (Trust upon Allah) is a Divine light and is like water which sates the Fakirs and grants perfect health and strength to their entire existence. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Kalan)

There is not a single soul upon this earth whose responsibility of sustenance is not taken by Allah. (Asrar-e-Qadri)

Sustenance of Mystics

One should know that the common people get their sustenance through hard work but the sustenance of the distinguished ones lies in the everlasting gnosis of Allah – the Eternal. One who has complete Tawakkal in Allah, neither waits for his daily livelihood nor annual sustenance. As he knows that once every person’s sustenance is in the destiny, the book of destiny had closed forever. The sustenance of a person having dead soul lies in covetousness. Moreover covetousness does not have stomach which one can fill, so, a covetous is never contented as he is on the wrong path.

The sustenance of Mystics is the absolute union with Allah for which they perpetually remain engrossed in Divinity. While their livelihood pursues them worriedly day and night. How can this reality be understood by the irreligious and indecent ignorant who are utterly deprived of good deeds and sagacity? Neither have they Tawakkal on Allah nor His gnosis! The food of the dung-worm is dung, so he lives in it happily. While the food of pure people is also pure and aromatic. Whoever seeks Allah, livelihood seeks him. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Kalan)

Allah – the Provider

Explanation: Although one gains livelihood through different mediums and causes, but the fact is that Allah created the mediums and causes in eternity. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Kalan)

Explanation: Everyone has placed his hopes and expectations in the causes, only a few have true Tawakkal on the Provider. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Kalan)

Listen O dearest! There is nothing superior then Allah. The creation searches for sustenance whereas the Fakirs seek the Sustainer (Allah). People are after the riches of this world whereas the Fakirs always remain attentive towards Allah – the Greatest and Omnipotent. Prophet Mohammad said, “Whoever died in a state of Divine love, his death is that of a martyr.” Hence, the seekers of Allah are martyrs while the seekers of the world are unfortunate because they remain deprived of the desire for Allah. Nothing in both the worlds is better or superior than the desire of Allah. (Mehek-ul-Faqr Kalan)

Sustenance seeks man

If sustenance did not seek man, a grain of wheat would never split the earth to sprout and come out. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Kalan)

Sustenance of Fakirs comes from Tawakkal in Allah

Destiny is divided into four categories. The destiny of Fakirs is that whatever they eat and drink, it generates the light of the gnosis of Allah within them because their sustenance comes from Tawakkal in Allah. From wherever they get their sustenance, they recognize it to be from Allah only. Some believe that sustenance comes from trade and profession, some get education to earn income to get sustenance, whereas some get their sustenance by unjustly snatching it from the poor. In short, Faqr is the only treasure which brings the ranks of honour, respect and felicity. Allah bestows the highest ranks of Faqr upon those great people who are one with Allah whereas the strangers (who neither have vision of Allah nor a peck of His gnosis) can never come close to Faqr at all. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)

Sultan Bahoo says in his Punjabi couplet:

Cry and beg to get Allah’s union

Explanation: One should Tawakkal in Allah. Moreover walk the path of Faqr with strength and utter determination. Where there is happiness after every grief, one should not fear to face such a difficulty. One should keep reminding oneself that according to the Quran, there is relief after every difficulty. Allah is void and free of all wants. Hence, one should cry and beg to get His union. (Abyat-e-Bahoo Kamil)

Whatever written in destiny, man will get it

Explanation: In this couplet, Sultan Bahoo has directed the seeker of Allah not to get worried about worldly needs. As whatever Allah has written in his destiny, he would definitely get it. The birds fly without carrying a grain of food because of their Tawakkal in Allah. They return to their nest empty-handed and have nothing to store for the next day. Allah is that Sustainer who grants sustenance even to the insect that lives within a rock. (Abyat-e-Bahoo Kamil)

Tawakkal of believers is tested

Through continuous zikr and tasawur of Ism-e-Allah Zaat, the Ism-e-Allah Zaat is engraved on the heart of the seeker and gives life to his soul. The heart is then strengthened by the Divine Love and the seeker receives eternal presence of the court of Allah. Here the faith of the true believer undergoes trials and tests and his courage, belief and Tawakkal on Allah are judged. He is showered with Divine Lights of Self Disclosure. (Shams-ul-Fuqara)

Tawakkal is Divine Light

Tawakkal is a Divine light and is like water which satiates the Fakirs and grants perfect health and strength to their entire existence. Allah says;

Meaning: And whoever trusts upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him. (Aal-e-Imran 37)

What is Tawakkal?

Tawakkal means to completely entrust one’s self to Allah. As human beings we have no control over our destiny. Allah has set our sustenance from eternity. Every living being will receive its part of the sustenance before death. So instead of worrying about the sustenance people should strive to achieve the purpose of their lives which is to recognise our Lord – Allah Almighty.

How can one have complete Tawakkal in Allah?

Complete Tawakkal in Allah is an attribute of Fakirs. It is something that the spiritual guide bestows through his benevolence. So the seekers of Allah and people who want inward peace and complete Tawakkal (Trust upon Allah) must search for a perfect spiritual guide and then adopt his company to gain esoteric beneficence.

Concluding words

The seeker of Allah must always have complete Tawakkal in Allah at every moment, in every matter and at every stage. He should hand over all his matters to Allah and free himself from such worries. Quran teaches us: “And I consign my affair to Allah. Surely, Allah is ever-watchful of the servants.” (Mu’min 23)
