Countless salutations and blessings be upon the Holy Prophet, the Seal of Prophets, whose blessed existence illuminates the world, whose name Allah Himself exalted, and whose arrival Allah celebrated upon the Throne. It is by the Mohammadan Reality’s grace that the moon, stars and planets are revolving in their orbits; The Sun is their source light and heat; birds are invoking Allah; the Earth has gravity and human is the best creation. Success in this world and hereafter depends on complete belief in the Mohammadan Reality. Therefore, those who do not believe in the Mohammadan Reality are depraved. The Mohammadan Reality is the manifestation of the Holy Prophet’s humanity and light.

Say: “I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is (only) One God. So, whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him perform righteous deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.”

(18:110)

People debate the first part of this verse ‘I am only a human being like you’ because it means the Holy Prophet was just a human being like us, God forbid! Allah answered this in the Quran that the Holy Prophet is most exalted of mankind and the Universal Divine Man upon whom revelation descended. Revelation does not descend on normal humans, only on Prophets. All souls came from the Holy Prophet’s light. The Holy Prophet has two forms: one of humanity and the other of light. He is perfect in every respect—intellectual, practical, moral, spiritual and luminous. Saying or believing that the Holy Prophet is just a normal human is misguidance.

A hadith says:

The Holy Prophet fasted for days continuously; the people also did the same but it was difficult for them. So, he forbade them (to fast continuously for more than one day). They said, “But you fast without break (no food was taken in the evening or in the morning).” The Holy Prophet replied, “I am not like you, for I am provided with food and drink (by Allah).

(Bukhari-1922)

Allah sent the Holy Prophet as guidance. He sent him in the form of a human.

Allah says in the Quran:

Say: “If there were angels on the earth, walking around as residents, We would have certainly sent down to them from heaven an angel as a messenger.”

(17:95)

Quran

The book Shan-e-Mustafa Bazuban-e-Mustafa (Meaning: The Holy Prophet’s glory in his own words) beautifully describes the glory of his humanity.

Other Prophets

Yusuf (Joseph)

Author says that Allah told the Holy Prophet to say “I am only a human being like you” in the Quran because Egyptian women denied Prophet Yusuf being human because of his beauty. If such was the astonishment at Yusuf’s beauty, then how much greater would people have been struck by the Holy Prophet. Allah told the Holy Prophet to say “I am only a human being like you” because otherwise the Arabs would cut their throats and call the Holy Prophet something else.

Isa (Jesus)

Isa brought the dead back to life and the Christians started calling him God. O beloved! You could even put life into trees and stones. People could have done the same to you. So, say “I am only a human being like you”

Ibrahim (Abraham)

When Prophet Ibrahim came face to face with Nimrod, the Prophet said if you are God then make the Sun rise from the west. So people started thinking that only those can be called God who makes the Sun rise from the west. The Holy Prophet would make the Sun rise from the west for Ali ibn Talib. Allah told you to say “I am only a human being like you” to prevent people from saying the same. (Shan-e-Mustafa Bazuban-e-Mustafa)

The Holy Prophet says “I am only a human being like you” at one point and “Who amongst you is similar to me?”. One highlights his slavehood to Allah and the other his Lordship.

Both these aspects belong to the Universal Divine Man. It would hurt anyone who loves the Holy Prophet that people misinterpret “I am only a human being like you”. Who could be like the Holy Prophet!

Holy Aspects

The Holy Prophet did not have a shadow. This shows that his existence is so pure and holy that sunrays would change direction. His light had consumed his humanity and turned it into light as well. Flies would not sit on him. He split the Moon into two with a gesture of his finger, sent the Sun back. His entire life is a proof that he is the best of mankind and a prophet of Allah.

Whoever develops association with the Holy Prophet becomes esteemed, purified, and elevated in rank. The woman associated with him is mother of the Muslims. Nation associated with him is the best of all generations. The book associated with him is above all other books. If anything that associates with the Holy Prophet becomes esteemed, how esteemed would he himself be? How can a human exemplify him? Our humanity is impure while the Holy Prophet’s humanity is pure. His humanity leads to the right path while ours is lost. Foul odor spreads from our sweat, while fragrance spreads from the sweat of the Holy Prophet.

A poet says:

Explanation: No messenger compares to the Holy Prophet. Stars shine for millions of years but are not as bright as the Sun. No one can completely understand the Mohammad Reality. None can go beyond the Throne.

Abdullah ibn Umar reported:

“It was narrated to me that the Holy Prophet had said ‘The prayer observed by a person sitting is half of the prayer.’ I came to him and found him praying in a sitting position. I said ‘Holy Prophet, it has been narrated to me that you said the prayer of a man in a sitting position is half of the prayer, whereas you are observing prayer sitting.’ He (the Holy Prophet) said ‘Yes, it is so, but I am not like anyone amongst you.”

Aisha bint Abi Bakr said, “I said, ‘O Holy Prophet! Do you sleep before offering the witr (rakah that has odd number) prayer?’ He replied, ‘O `Aisha! My eyes sleep but my heart remains awake’!”

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Holy Prophet said, “You see me facing the Qibla; but, by Allah, nothing is hidden from me regarding your bowing and submission and I see you from behind my back.”

The Holy Prophet’s Different Forms in the Realms

Realm of Divine Solitude

When Allah intended to manifest Himself in multiplicity He descended from Transcendent Unity and revealed Himself. The very first level of descent is referred to as ‘Treasure’ (Kanzan  کَنْزًا ) in the Qudsi Hadith. This is the foremost level of manifestation of Divine Essence where the Essence revealed in the form of Mohammadan light. In fact, this light is the Treasure which desires to be manifested. This level is the manifestation of Essence in the core of Essence and the manifestation of Reality in the core of Reality. This is also called the Mohammadan Reality or the revelation of Mohammadan light from the Absolute Divine light.

Thus, when Allah decided to manifest Himself in multiplicity coming out of the Incomparable and Unknowable realm, He descended to the realm of First Manifestation and the light of Ahad concealed in the veil of ‘M’ of Ahmad manifested Himself as Ahmad.

The following Hadiths and the Qudsi Hadiths are reference towards the Mohammadan Reality. The Holy Prophet said:

اَوَّلُ مَا خَلَقَ اللّٰہُ نُوْرِیْ

Meaning: First of all, Allah manifested my light.

Explanation: I am from the light of Allah and all the creation is from my light.

Meaning: First of all, Allah manifested my soul.

Allah says in the Quran:

Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you (O Prophet!) actually pledge allegiance to Allah. The Hand of Allah is over their hands.

(48: 10)

Realm of Divinity

At this level the Mohammadan light manifested as the Divine soul. Hence, Divine soul is in fact the Mohammadan light and this soul is the real human being.

Allah says in the Quran:

And breathe My Soul into it. (15:29)

And strengthened them with His Soul. (58:22)

We call the Mohammadan Light the Soul of Allah, because the Essence never segregates from the Soul, even after manifestation. The Divine Light never separates from the Mohammadan Light, even after it takes the form of the Holy Prophet.

Realm of Power:

The Divine soul which is non-created light of Allah or the Mohammadan light, is descended to the realm of power clad in particular dress of this realm which is called ‘the kingly soul’. The kingly soul concealed Divine soul in its cover like a tree grows from its seed and also conceals the seed in it. The kingly soul is the first dress of Divine soul.

Realm of Angels:

At this level the kingly soul was clothed in the cover of celestial soul and appeared in symbolic forms.

The Physical Realm:

The Divine Essence covered in veils of the kingly soul, the celestial soul and the bestial soul revealed in the elemental physical forms of the creation.

Conclusion to the Realms:

The conclusion is that the Holy Prophet has different forms on different realms. And that he manifested in the physical realm in the form of the Universal Divine Man. Allah revealed the Quran to the Holy Prophet, made him the bringer of good news, and the one who calls towards guidance. Those who only see the Holy Prophet’s physical form and ignore the Mohammadan Reality only see the humanity not the light. Abu Jahl only saw the Holy Prophet’s physical form and stayed a disbeliever while Abu Bakr saw the Divine Light in the Holy Prophet and became the first believer. Allah says in the Quran:

  • O People of the Book! Indeed, Our Messenger has come to you, who clarifies for you much of what you have been concealing of the Book, and overlooks many things (that you have been doing). There has indeed come to you a light from Allah (i.e. Prophet Mohammad (blessings and peace be upon him) and a manifest Book (i.e. the Holy Qur’an). (5: 15)

Allah also says about the people who only see the Holy Prophet’s physical form:

  • And nothing has prevented (these) people from believing when the guidance has come to them, except that they say: ‘Has Allah sent a human as a messenger?’ (17: 94)

The Quran uses the word AbduHoo for the Holy Prophet.

AbduHoo is made of two words Abd (Human) and Hoo (Divine Light). Other people are normal humans meaning Abd and only the Universal Divine Man, the Holy Prophet, is AbduHoo meaning human as well as light.

Allah says:

Is Allah not sufficient for His servant? Yet they (the disbelievers) seek to frighten you (Esteemed Prophet) with those (false gods) besides Him! But whoever Allah leaves to stray will be left with no guide.

(39: 36)

Allama Iqbal also used AbduHoo for the Holy Prophet in his Sufi poetry.

Explanation:

The reality of AbduHoo is beyond your intellect because He (Prophet Mohammad) is a human as well as the Essence (the Divine light).

Explanation:

AbduHoo is the inscriber of destiny. He possesses all the realms whether deserted or populated, mortal or immortal.

Explanation:

AbduHoo is the invigorator as well as the origin of life, he is the mirror as well as the rock. It refers to the Quranic verses which say that he was sent as the informer of good tidings and the forewarner (Bashir and Nazir).

Explanation:

Slaves (Abd) are different from AbduHoo. The difference is that slave keeps waiting for Allah’s attention but the grandeur of AbduHoo is that Allah waits for him and seeks his wish.

Explanation:

There is a beginning of AbduHoo but no end. He transcends time having no mornings and evenings like ours. There is an origin of the Holy Prophet as his light first of all manifested from the Divine light. However, he is infinite like the light of Allah.

Explanation:

In this verse Iqbal is referring to the incident of battle of Badr when the Holy Prophet threw stones on to the pagans due to which the troops of the enemy retreated. In the Holy Quran this event is described in these words:

(Esteemed Prophet,) you did not throw (the handful of sand and pebbles at your enemies) when you threw (at the outset of the battle of Badr); instead, it was Allah Who threw.

(8: 17)

Mohammadan Reality is the reality of AbduHoo. AbduHoo is the manifestation of the Holy Prophet’s slavehood to Allah and Lordship. Ibn Arabi says about the Universal Divine Man:

The Universal Divine Man is the comprehensiveness of slavehood and Lordship. Allah is One and His representative (the Universal Divine Man) is also one (in the world).

It is explained in “Mirat-ul-Arifeen” about the level of AbduHoo:

When the servant is adorned with the attributes of the Lord, and the Lord is adorned with the attributes of the servant, then the Lord is manifest in the form of the servant, and the form of the servant is assumed by the Lord. At this station, neither does the servant remain a servant, nor the Lord remain the Lord. Rather, this is the station of AbduHoo.

(Mirat-ul-Arifeen)

Mirat-ul-Arifeen

Slavehood means to do good deeds only for Allah. There should be no desire of reward in these deeds, they should only be for Allah. Lordship is a Divine secret that only the Saints who are knowers of Allah possess. Allah says in the Quran:

He does not speak out of (his own) desire. It (i.e. his speech) is only a revelation sent down (to him). (53: 3-4)

Conclusion

Dear readers! The conclusion is that the Holy Prophet is light in the form of a human. His pure body is a manifestation of Divine theophanies. Allah Almighty also mentions His beloved in the Quran sometimes as Sirāj Munīr (a shining lamp), sometimes as al-Najm (the star), sometimes as al-Shams (the sun), and sometimes as al-Qamar (the moon). All these names express his light.

Tazkiyah al-Nafs and the Perfect Spiritual Guide (Murshid Kamil Akmal)

Sultan ul Faqr VII Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen says in his book “The Mohammadan Reality”:

The Holy Prophet came in the material world wearing the form of The Universal Divine Man. In form he is human, but in reality, he is light. His humanness is pure, undefiled, matchless and so subtle that it cast no shadow.

The Mohammadan Reality

The radiant light was visible from the blessed face of the Holy Prophet. His sacred body was light, and his offspring too were light. The title of Uthman ‘Dhul-Nurayn’ (the possessor of two lights) was given because two daughters of the Prophet, Ruqayya and Umm Kulthum, were married to him one after the other. A poet says about the Holy Prophet:

تیری نسل پاک میں ہے بچہ بچہ نور کا

تو ہے عین نور تیرا سب گھرانا نور کا

Explanation: In your pure lineage, every child is of light. You are the very essence of light, and your entire household is nothing but light.

  • Narrated Jabir Bin Samurah: I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) on a clear night, so I looked at the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and at the moon, and he was wearing a red Hullah, and he looked better than the moon to me. (Tirmidhi-2811)

Explanation: The one whose radiance, enlightend the darkened inwards. Upon that luminous countenance, millions of salutations.

Final Words

We pray to Allah Almighty to grant us gnosis of the Mohammad Reality, and by the blessings of the month of Rabi‘al-Awwal, forgive our sins and include us among His close ones. Ameen.

Explanation: O human consciousness, take pride in that being (Mohammadan Light). For your true dignity lies in the Holy Prophet being human.
