Patience and Determination in the Light of Quran & Sunna

Patience and determination literally mean being resolutely firm, unwavering, firmly established and perseverant. In sharia, patience and determination mean that while walking through the right path i.e. Islam, remain steadfast and have proper control over inner baser self in the time of distress, hardship, loss, pain, oppression and trials.

Importance of Patience and Determination in the Light of Holy Quran

Allah’s help is with those who observe patience and determination. He says in the Holy Quran:

یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوا اسۡتَعِیۡنُوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ وَ الصَّلٰوۃِ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ مَعَ الصّٰبِرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۵۳﴾

Meaning: O believers! Always seek help (from Me) through patience and Prayer. Certainly, Allah is (always) with those who observe patience. (Al-Baqarah: 153)

It is clear from the above verse that one should seek Allah’s help through prayer and should wait patiently for its results. Hence, Allah loves only those who observe patience and determination. Therefore, we should observe patience in order to become the beloved of Allah. Allah Almighty has given glad tidings to a patient person in the Holy Quran.

He says:

Meaning: And, (O Beloved!) give glad tidings to those who observe patience. (Al-Baqarah: 155)

A glad tiding by Allah Almighty is a great honor and a source of success. Moreover, Allah Almighty promised to give full reward to the steadfast.

He says in the Holy Quran:

اِنَّمَا یُوَفَّی الصّٰبِرُوۡنَ  اَجۡرَہُمۡ بِغَیۡرِ حِسَابٍ ﴿۱۰﴾

Meaning: So the steadfast will certainly be given their reward without measure. (Al-Zumar: 10)

Similarly, patience and determination are signs of highly resolute people. Everyone cannot patiently endure adversity. Therefore, Allah says:

Meaning: And patiently endure every suffering that touches you. Verily, these are matters of great courage and high resolve. (Luqman: 17)

Importance of Patience and Determination in Hadith

Patience and determination are means of forgiveness of sins. Therefore, the Holy Prophet said:

  • Whenever a true believer is afflicted with hardship or pain or even a thorn prickles him, Allah will forgive some of his sins in return. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Moreover, every human being needs guidance to reach his destination. Patience along with determination provide light for this guidance. The Holy Prophet says:

اَلصَّبْرُ ضِیَائٌ

Meaning: Patience is light.

In the light of patience as well as determination, life becomes easier for a Muslim. While explaining the importance of patience, he says:

  • Patience is one of the treasures of heaven.

Hence, we should benefit from the treasure of patience and determination. Nowadays, impatience has created many problems for us. So, the solution to these problems lies in patience and determination. Moreover, the Holy Prophet declared patience as half faith. He says:

Meaning: Patience is half the faith.

Conclusively, it is impossible to have faith without patience. An enduring man saves half the faith. The importance of patience can be judged from the above Hadith.

Moreover, human success is dependent upon patience along with determination. Prophet Mohammad says:

Meaning: (Allah’s) help and victory is due to patience.

Hence, patience is the ultimate key to success and Allah’s help, while impatience leads to failure.

Examples of Patience and Determination from the Sacred Life of Prophet Mohammad

In order to preach the message of truth to every nook and corner of the world, the Holy Prophet remained steadfast with patience and determination, and endured greatest difficulties and hardships with great humility and patience. A few examples of which are given below:

Once Uqaba ibn Abi Mu’ayt placed heavy tripe of camel on sacred back of the Holy Prophet.  He was busy in prayer at that time. All the disbelievers, who were standing there, started laughing at the sacred Prophet of Allah. Fatimah bint Mohammad came and took off load from his sacred back and cursed the disbelievers. At this, the Holy Prophet said:

  • O my beloved daughter! Be patient. May Allah guide them. They do not know what is best for them.

Ill Treatment of Abu Lahab’s wife, Umm Jamil bint Harb

Abu Lahab’s wife, Umm Jamil bint Harb, used to spread thorns in the path of the Holy Prophet. Due to her this act, the sacred feet of Prophet Mohammad injured, but he never cursed her.

Social Boycott at Shib Abi Talib

The disbelievers of Makah boycotted the Holy Prophet along with his sacred family and followers and they were besieged in the dark valley of Shib Abi Talib for three years. At this awful situation, he showed unparalleled patience.

Preaching Tour of Taif

During the preaching tour of Taif, the people of Taif treated him cruelly. The wicked boys of Taif threw stones at him until his feet were soaked with his sacred blood. Angel Gabriel asked permission to torment them but he refused and prayed for their guidance.

The Night of Migration

On the night of the migration, the disbelievers besieged the house of the Holy Prophet to kill him (God forbids). On this occasion Prophet Mohammad showed great patience too. So, Allah Almighty helped him to leave the house safely.

Advice to the Family of Ammar ibn Yasir

Ammar ibn Yasir and his mother Sumayyah bint Khabbat were brutally martyred in front of the eyes of the Holy Prophet. At this painful event, the Holy Prophet advised his family:

  • O family of Yasir! Be patient.

Perseverance

Perseverance is a spiritual power to face the trials on the path of Truth with patience and courage. It is the base to succeed both in religion and the world. In the path of Faqr to keep travelling with perseverance is in itself a huge success. In the ardent love of Allah, a person should keep moving towards the destination bravely and should not feel afraid or nervous by the difficulties encountered. People are afraid of even a single calamity while lovers of Allah happily embrace countless blows. Even after knowing that this path is full of innumerable difficulties as is with the straight path, they put to sail their ship in the tsunami of love. (Sufism – The Soul of Islam)

Sultan Bahoo’s Quotes about Perseverance

Sultan Bahoo says:

  • Faqr is the path of perseverance not of miracles or sensual desires. Perseverance is an attribute of the chosen ones while miracles are considered as filth and impurity on this path. (Ain-ul-Faqr)
  • The person who remains perseverant on the path of Faqr becomes the holder of secrets of Allah. While one who rebels against Ism-e-Allah Zaat, leaves perseverance and returns to the world has turned his back on the kingly rank and the secret of Faqr. He is a vulture who has set his gaze on the carrion. Hence he will be disgraced in both the worlds and will never be satiated. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)

Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali’s Quotes about Perseverance

Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali says:

  • In Faqr the greatest miracle is steadfastness and perseverance. (Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali – Life and Teachings)
  • The real marvel and excellence on the path of Faqr is to reach the destination after passing through all the trials and obstacles with perseverance. (Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali – Life and Teachings)

The greatest effect of patience and determination on the society is that peace is commonly observed in those societies. It is because, if the members of the society did not observe patience at odd or unpleasant situations, then unrest will be common there.

Development:

A society certainly faces difficulties during development. Moving on the path of progress is possible only if all the members endure those difficulties with great patience. On the other hand, the process of development stops if they behave irrationally.

In order to move on the path of unity, society sometimes has to go through bitter situations. Patience in these painful moments builds unity. This unity is the most important factor in the rise of society.

Love and Harmony:

When the members of a society observe patience, the conflicts between them greatly reduce. Resultantly, an atmosphere of love grows and this atmosphere proves to be the first step in the development of a society.

Attaining Spiritual level of Submission to Divine Will:

The members of a society attain the spiritual level of submission to Divine will only when they show patience in difficult occasions like jihad etc. This is the greatest source of prosperity in the world. Allah says:

Meaning: Certainly, Allah is (always) with those who observe patience. (Al-Baqarah: 153)
